, Wanganui, Avondale and Waihi tied in the contest for the cup, and it was in tho play-off that Wanganui camo to tho front. THE SEAFIELD TOURNAMENT. OPENS ON SATURDAY. (By “Golf co Cleeke, Esq.”) “Fore!” and away will be the war cry of a large number of enthusiastic golfers who will assemble at the Seafield links to participate in this popular club’s annual tournament, which commences on Saturday morning next, at 9 o’clock. The tourney will continue on Monday (Labour Day), and conclude on Tuesday afternoon. At time of writing ideal weather prevails, and if the elements will only remain reasonable for tho next few days, them a most enjoyable outing is predicted for all competing golfers and visitors, and fresh records should be established for tho course. Seafield links during the incoming week are certain to be well patronised by players and visitors alike, and some of the bigger matches are sure to attract large galleries. Excellent Entries. Splendid entries have been received. Many leading golfers will participate in the tournament, viz.: R. McNiven, J. Goss, J. Harrison, J. C. Bidwell, L. Quin, J. Harold, F. Parkes. Imlay Saunders, and other local and Dominion celebrities. Tho tournament will open on Saturday morning with qualifying rounds for the Seafield Champion- | ship and Scafield Cup (handicap), played over 36 holes, the best sixteen players in each event to qualify, with match play thereafter. Competitors in these events will also participate in the medal handicap matches. The finals will eventuate on tho Tuesday afternoon. In addition, two bogey matches will also eventuate. Conditions at Seafl eld. The links have improved considerably of late, I*he fairways in particular being in excellent condition. The greens proper have been spelled, with the result that they have a fair covering of grass, and should bo in good order for putting. Good scores should be recorded, and doubtless some of tho old records will be broken. Fine Golf by R. 0. Butters. During tho week R. C. Butters, the local pro., in a four-ball match over the Seafield links, played first-class golf. Butters has a beautifully moulded style, and the manner in which he hits tho ball, and gets distance is just fine. He was on most of the greens with his second shot, and but for tho heavy nature of the green, which precluded good putting, would have recorded an excellent round. With tho advent of dry courses, Butters will undoubtedly be rattling off some tip top averages.
