SHOOTING

DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB OPENING OF SEASON The Wanganui Defence Rifle Club’s working bee has been busy on the Aramoho range (the same few bees) every Saturday for the last month, but the work necessary to put the range in firstclass order is not yet complete. It will yet require another afternoon to finish it. The committee report that they will be able to open the season on Monday, October 26 (Labour Day) as the work still to be completed is at the long ranges and will not interfere with shooting up to 600 yards. The programme for Labour Day is the usual match, President v. VicePresident’s teams, to be picked on the range. Shooting will commence at 9 a.m. A sweepstake match will be fired in the afternoon. Another match which should create great interest, is one arranged by Tv •C. H. Burnett, between three ex-New Zealand champions, Mr C. Kruse, Mr Walter Churton and Mr Remington. Mr Burnett has donated a trophy for the winner.

Light refreshments will be provided on the range and supporters and interested friends are cordially invited to pay the club a visit on the opening day. Four more new members were elected to the club last week. To assist young shots the club has purchased a number of new aperture sights which will be lent to them for the flrst twelve months and at the end of which time the member can either hand the sight back or purchase it from the club. This should help to relieve the first year’s expense.

The sale of the £1 rifle has been discontinued by the Defence Department. It has reduced the cost of new H.V. barrels, and rifles with new barrel, body and holt heads can now be purchased for £3 each.
