AN HISTORIC CANOE

. INTERESTING RELIC AT BLENHEIM [Per Press Association.] BLENHEIM, Oct. 20. There arrived at Blenheim this morning an interesting relic of the early days of Pelorus Sound in the shape of a Maori war canoe, presented by the Rutland family, formerly of Patoa, Pelorus Sound. The canoe was gouged out from a solid totara tree by Hewi Whiro, chief of the Taituku te Hora, for Kereopa, chief of the Ruapaka, who left it to his son, Mcihana Kereopa in 1869. Kereopa used it for many years for shipping chaff to Kaiuma for Brownlie and Co., carrying over fifty sacks each trip. The canoe has been placed in Waterlea Park.
