SCHOLARSHIP QUESTIONS

REVIEW OF SITUATION. The enormous increase in the numbers of pupils attending post-primary schools during the last decade has necessitated a review of the whole purposes and courses of these schools. This also involves the reconsideration of the system of national scholarships. In the aggregate, a large amount of money is spent on scholarships, although the individual amounts are small, and various questions have arisen as to whether the scholarships should carry boarding allowance in the case of country pupils. There is also the question of the equitable distribution of scholars among the various grades of schools. The Minister for Education, Sir James Parr, states that before deciding on any changes he will have to confer with secretaries of boards, senior inspectors and selected principals of post-primary institutions, so that the question may be considered from every point of view.
