PARK IMPROVEMENT
FORESTRY PLANTING A COMPREHENSIVE SCHEME SUBMITTED TO COUNCIL BY CITY GARDENER. A comprehensive and attractive scheme in regard to forestry planting at Matipo and Hylton Parks was submitted to last night’s meeting of the City Council by the city gardener (Mr S. T. Tucker), and approved. In outlining his proposals in regard to the former reservation, Mr Tucker pointed out that thero were already 38 acres planted, and he would, recommend the completion of the work and starting on Hylton Park. Of the 44 acres remaining at Matipo Park, he could plant from fifteen to twenty acres a year, and clear the scrub sufficiently for planting, at a cost of £175 per year, with an additional sum of £25 for fencing. At Hylton Park there were eight acres planted, leaving about 30 acres available for planting exclusive of the sixteen acres occupied by the grave] workings. Of these thirty acres there was a considerable amount of gorse and blackberry and this should be cleared and planted at the rate of, say, ten acres a year, costing £2OO, besides cost of fencing at £3O, making a total of £230 per annum. The variety of trees to be planted on both these parks should be as follows: Eucalyptus (such varieties as viminajis, eugenioides, fastigata and Marcarthurii); abies Douglasii (Oregon pine); sequoia sempervirens (California red wood); pinus Strobus; pinus insignia; cupressus macrocarpa. The number of trees required was 30,000 per annum, and of these a considerable number of the pinus insignis and cupressus macrocarpa were ready for next planting season, and the eucalyptus would also be ready by that time.
