GOLF
LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP FOURTH BOUND COMPLETED. SEMI-FINALS FOLLOW. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Oct. 20. The weather was ideal and the links in perfect condition for the fourth round of the Dominion Ladies’ Golf Championship. Brilliant sunshine and the slightest of breezes made the links very pleasant. Details are as follows: LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP. Fourth Bound. Miss J. A. Cook (Otago) beat Miss Upton (Auckland), 2 up and 1. Miss Withers (Geraldine) beat Miss M. Payton (Auckland), 2 up and 1. Miss Jervis (Hutt) beat Miss Culling (Auckland), 3 up and 2. Mrs. Dodgshun (Otago) beat Miss Chrystall (Christchurch), 4 up and 3. In the semi-final games to-morrow Miss J. A. Cook plays Miss Withers, and Miss Jarvis plays" Mrs. Dodgshun. NOTES ON THE PLAY. Otago v. Christchurch. The big interest of the day centred in the game between Mrs. Dodgshun (Otago) and Miss Chrystall (Christchurch). Mrs. Dodgshun played the better golf throughout and deserved her win. Although outdriven throughout, she played her ball steadily down the centre of the fairway, used her ibrassie with deadly effect, and was conspicuously successful at approaching and putting. At the short sixth Miss Chrystall played a splendid two, thereby reducing her handicap to two down, but at the ninth Mrs. Dodgshun was three up. Mrs. Dodgshun took the eleventh and Miss Chrystall the 13th, and the next two being halved, the game ended. A Canterbury Winner Miss Payton was again uncertain in her game, repeating the mistakes of yesterday. For the first half of tie game she outdrove her opponent, but from the ninth hole the position was reversed. Errors of direction in tee shots were her chief difficulty, this causing her trouble on more than one occasion, but in the other departments of the game she equalled Miss Withers. Varying Fortunes. In her match against Miss Jervis Miss Culling began well, but Miss Jervis was two up at the eighth. At the tenth Miss Jervis sank her chip shot from the rough below the bunker amidst applause from the “gallery.” Donnelly Cup. The teams entered for the Donnelly Cup played in the afternoon, the results being as follows: Wellington.—Mrs. Guy Williams 84, Miss Gambrill 86, Mrs. Weston 91 and Mrs. Hunt 99; aggregate 360. Auckland.—Mi ss M. Payton 85, Miss Culling 94, Miss Macfarlane 96, and Miss Upton 97; aggregate 372.
