TAIHAPE BOROUGH COUNCIL. Monthly Report. (From the “Chronicle’s” Special Correspondent.; Following are the monthly reports which were presented at the last meeting of the Borough Council: — Engineer’s Report. “The work of altering the gates and footpath leading to the hospital is practically completed and the cost of same will be given in my next report. Two new six-inch culverts have been put in Kaka Road near Ruru road. Water channels, etc., have been cleaned out. A start has been made with the formation of the footpath fronting the cottages on Mataroa Road. This work will be completed as speedily as possible. It will be necessary to shift the electric pole lines out from the fence line. A number of them are in the centre of the footpath. The engineer of the Rangitikei County Council has forwarded prices for crushed metal on trucks at Kakariki as follows: —Two and a-hal? to two-inch metal, 6s per ton; for chips or three-quarter metal, 7s 6d per ton. The freight from Kakariki to Taihape is 4s lid per ton. This makes the total 10s lid for two and a-half-inch metal and 12s 5d per theequarter-inch chips. If taken by the cubic yard instead of by the ton the price works out at Ils 16d per cubic yard and chips at 13s 4d per cubic yard. The new pound board has been repainted and the rates revised and will be erected this week. Timber for the Fire Brigade billiard room is on the site and has been stacked ready for the builder to commence operations. The caretaker reports that the main pipe line is in good working order. The top-dressing was commenced on the oval domain about three weeks ago, but had to be discontinued owing to the wet weather.” Electrical Engineer’s Report. Power-house.—The generating plant has been running well during the month and nothing but the usual adjustments has been carried out. The total output for the rrzreth of September was 30,740 units. The average load for the month was 42.7 k.w. with a peak load of 166 k.w. The output for the corresponding month of last year was 23,650 units. Wiring Department.— This department has been exceptionally busy and a large number of repairs have been put through. A total number of 37 lighting points and 22 heating points have been installed and connected to the mains. Treasurer’s Report. The sum of £962 19s 6d has been paid into the district fund account since last meeting. Accounts paid total £1192 6s lid and the debit balance is £GO3 Is 3d. Credit balances in loan accounts are as follows: £28,000 loan• account, £328 19s 8d; £9200 loan account, £441 18s 3d: £l2OO Joan account, £314 18s; £24.000 loan account, £l5B 19s 6d; fire engine loan, £242 13a 2d; electric extension loan, £357 7s Id; workers’ dwellings, £l5 12s 6d; oval Domain (improve), £3 2s lOd; oval Domain, £llB 3s 10d; abattoir loan, £366 Ils Od.

MUNICIPAL ABATTOIRS. Officially Opened. The newly-erected municipal abattoirs were officially opened on Monday in the presence of a good attendance of citizens. The ceremony was performed by the Mayor (Mr. A. J. Joblin) who, in a brief speech, expressed the hope that the building would meet with the requirements of local butchers. A bullock and three sheep were killed and dressed, the use of the many laboursaving devices creating much interest among those present. The abattoir, which is up-to-date in every respect, was erected by Mr. Collins, of Feilding, under the supervision of Mr. Jorgenson, architect, of Palmerston North.
