VALUELESS CHEQUES ISSUED
YOUNG MAN’S LAPSE TWO YEARS’ REFORMATIVE. DETENTION. PALMERSTON N., Oct. 19. Lionel Ellis Carroll, son of well-to-do Sydney people, 22 years of age, pleaded guilty at the Alagistrate ’a Court to four charges arising out of endering valueless chequed here. Accused had been in Court previously on charges of breaking, entering and theft, and was admitted to probation. Obtaining possession of a cheque book on arrival at Palmerston North, accused visited several shops, purchasing articles and receiving change after tendering a cheque, usually for £lO. Accused risked if he could be given a chance to learn a trade.
The Afagistrate sentenced him to reformative detention for two years on the first charge, and on the others he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, the Alagistrate saying that accused could learn a trade now.
