BOWLING
UNPROPITIOUS WEATHER
SPOILS TWO OPENING CEREMONIES
The Wanganui and Gonville Bowling Clubs opened the season on Saturday afternoon, but showery weather prevented the bowlers enjoying any play. The opening ceremonies, however, provided pleasant social entertainment. The St. John’s and Wanganui East clubs managed to get in an afternoon’s play. Wanganui. There was a largo gathering at the Wanganui Club’s green, where the president, Mr G. W. Harden, declared the season open. After welcoming the visitors Mr Harden feelingly referred to the fact that since the close of last season no fewer than six members of the club had passed away. He made special reference to the death of 'the late Mr Andrew McFarlane, one of the original members, and a gentleman who was well known and highly respected by all with whom he had come in contact.
The president thanked the lady friends of the club for the help they had given during last season in various ways, particularly in regard to the afternoon teas provided. He also thanked the green superintendent and the caretaker. Referring to the club full rink competitions to be decided during the season which they were now opening, Mr Harden said they wore reverting to the old system. He mentioned that the Garrison Band had kindly; attended for the afternoon, and he thanked them for coming along- and assisting so materially towards making the opening an enjoyable one. Mr Harden then presented the trophies won in the various club competitions, as follows: Singles (Bates Cup).—H. F. Tilley. Pairs.—A. McFarlane and H. Tilley. Full Rinks.—Cavell, Doull, Shewan, McAneny (s.). The president stated that a life membership badge was to be presented to Mr C. J. McCarthy. Mrs Harden then threw the first jack of the season, and the green was opened with cheers. Afternoon tea and the Garrison Band’s music gave those present an afternoon’s pleasure. Gonville. Members and their lady friends, together with a number of visiting bowlers, made a good showing at the Gonville Club’s green, where the president, Mr J. Steel, gave the opening address. Mr Steel expressed regret that the weather had precluded play, but said that the prospects for the .season were bright. The big green had been relaid during the “off” season, and, as could be seen, gave splendid promise for the season. The pavilion had also been greatly improved, and it was very gratifying indeed to know that they had many members who were willing to give the time and energy to carry out the good work as a labour of love that had been done in this connection. Mr Steel then paid a well-deserved tribute to the secretary (Mr A* B. Sharpe). He referred to the very deep debt of gratitude the club owed to the ladies, who had been a big factor towards the success achieved last season, and also in the winter months, in the splendid work they had done in providing many good things for afternoon teas on the green and suppers at the dances. In appreciation of their services he called for three cheers, and these were given in a very hearty manner.
The president then called upon Mrs Steel to deliver the first ball, and this ceremony having been performed and cheers given, afternoon tea was served. The green will be open for play this week if the weather is favourable. Wanganui East. Only a little light rain fell at Wanganui’East and the club members had an enjoyable afternoon’s play.
