WAVERLEY
(From the “Chronicle’s” Special Correspondent). The usual monthly meeting of the Town Board was held on Tuesday. Present: Alossrs R. P. Palmer (chair), A. J. Ad lam, W. Wicks, J. Ridge, E. C. Dallison, and J. E. Palmer (clerk). Correspondence.—The Railway Department wrote stating that it- intended to proceed with the electric lighting of the Waverlcy Railway Station during the current financial year, and presuming that no objection would be raised to the lighting of the cottages. The Town Board’s Engineer, Mr Wallace, stated that it was not the policy of the Board to supply current outside the supply area, but if the railway station was also included it would be treated as a public utility. Engineer’s Report.—l am enclosing herewith correspondence dealing with the lighting of the station. The signal engineer has written asking the Board to run the overhead mains as far as the railway station. This letter is in reply to mine of September 15. In his letter the signal engineer says: “It was understood from your letter of the 31st Julj r that there would bo no question of reticulation to the railway station.” Afv letter of that date only confirmed the action of tho Board’s representatives in granting a supply of current to the cottages on condition that the lighting of tho station was proceeded with. No question of a concession in connection with the reticulation of this point was mentioned or inferred, as the usual terms are that all mains further than sixty feet from the supply plains have to be paid for by the consumer. It not be reasonable to expect this Board to run the wires and erect polos to the station. Furthermore, we shall have to run fifteen chains of overhead lino to the terminal pole at our station road for which no charge can be made. The annual receipts from the cottages and station would not warrent any expenditure on the work beyond the present terminal polo. Before replying to the signal engineer’s letter, I would like the Board’s decision on the matter.
The following is my report for the month ending on the 13th inst: The plant is working satisfactorily, the lead of water being above normal. The transformer has been placed in commission at the corner of Gloag Street and Weraroa Road. The high tension lines and fuses have been rearranged at this point and the general layout made more safe for handling in case of faults occurring. The old transformer has been lot down on the platform in readiness for removal to the workshop for repairs. Several faults of a minor nature have been attended to. House wiring to the value of £4O is in hand and being proceeded with. During the past month I have had to renew ton lamps in the town dock, and I should like to know if this item is to be charged to the Board, as I have no information as to whether tho Board have officially taken it over. The chimney of tho residence at the powerhouse requires attention. The hath, too, has rusted out and can be repaired only as a temporary measure. A communication was received from the Alinister of Lands stating that the replacement of the old buildings now doing service as a Post Office was on the list for replacement. This work is to be proceeded with at the earliest possible date. Tho Alinister of Lands also advised that the War Alemorial site has been transferred to the Waverley Town Board. General Business.-—Poles: Tho quotes for those were left in the hands of the chairman. It was resolved that the Board can supply electric light to the station, ‘but that tho Department is to stand the cost of same.—The engineer was instructed to write accordingly. It was decided that the Board boar the cost of lighting and providing lamps for the memorial clock. Air Dallison was commissioned to have the necessary repairs effected to the engineer’s residence. Channelling and Curbing.—After some discussion it was decided to do this work by day labour, and that the Board’s roadman supervise the work. Accounts amounting to £714 Is were passed for paypicnt.
