DAYLIGHT SAVING

SUPPORT BY SPORIS BODIES All the summer sports bodies—swimming, cricket, bowling, tennis, etc.— throughout the Dominion arc making an organised effort with a view to inducing candidates for Parliament to support daylight saving legislation. At a meeting of the Wanganui Central Swimming Club on Thursday night the following circular was received from the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association:— “The New Zealand Sports Protection League, in pursuance of its policy of supporting what is known as ‘summer time’ or ‘daylight saving’ has requested this association to communicate with its clubs and invite their active co-operation towards securing in New Zealand legislation similar to that in force in the United Kingdom. This measure has been repeatedly brought forward by Mr T. K. Sidey, but has not yet reached the Statute Book. Last year a Parliamentary Committee set up to take evidence with regard to this measure, and the evidence shows that it is supported by all sections of the community, and that there is no substantial evidence against it. In Britain daylight saving has been in vogue for eleven years, and last session the House of Commons made the measure permanent, the period of its adoption extending over six months of the year. I think it may be taken for granted that the adoption, of daylight saving would be ardently supported by practically every swimmer in New Zealand, as under it an extra hour per day is obtained for daylight recreation. It is felt, however, that if this reform is to be brought about the co-operation of all interested in sport is necessary. Clubs arc asked to arrange for members to attend the meetings of all Parliamentary candidates in their respective districts during the election campaign, and put to each candidate the question: 'Will you support legislation to provide “summer time” similar to that adopted in Great Britain?’”
