A telegram from Glencoe, Illinois, states that Tilden is defending Ins State championship title here. He said he had not received a summons to appear before the 1 nited States Lawn Tennis Association, and declared emphatically he had not violated the new player-writer rule through interviews. He*questioned whether he would appear if summoned. Ho said: "If I happen to be in New York at the time I. may attend the meeting, and I may not. I certainly will not leave any tournament to do so.’’ Tilden’s conduct has revived the whole controversy over the definition of an amateur. The examination oftho case is regarded as a certainty, since officials are apprehensive of other nations protesting in the event of Tildcir continuing the practice during intof national events in which the Lnilet States is victorious.
