HOW JOB CONTROL WORKS
THE MELBOURNE INCIDENT COURAGEOUS OR STUPID! MELBOURNE, July 24. When the firemen of the Weeroona were assured that Mr Bruce wlas nor on board they demanded a guarantee of I £lOO that, he was not, so one of the | guests guaranteed that amount, where- ; upon the men demanded £4OO, which was refused. The majority of the guests left the vessel. Tho firemen concerned were prompt.lv dismissed by the owners. The action is regarded as part of a pre arranged plan, as the men delayed action till the time the bo*at was due to leave the wharf. Referring to the position later, Air Bruce, who spent the day in his otnee, said that it was the most incredibly foolish and stupid thing he had ever heard of men doing. They certainly had provided the public with a practical example of the working of job control in a manner which would bring home the realisation of it to everybody. Air Walsh said it was a matter of groat satisfaction to him that tho seamen of Australia were courageous enough to protest, against vindictive insult levelled at seamen by the Prime
M inistor. (The steamer Weerona with over a thousand notabilities aboard to view the entry of tho American Fleet was held up, tho seamen refusing to take the vessel to sea until Air Bruce, who they thought, was aboard, had publicly apologised for his remarks concerning tho seamen mladc in the House of Representatives during the debate on tho Immigration Bill. The demand was disdainfully refused and the guests came ashore. Later the party embarked on Another steamer).
