AUSTRALIANS BEATEN BY WAIKATO (Per Press Association.) HAMILTON. July 22. Australia’s hockey players arrived from Rotorua and were welcomed by the Mayor. They played the Waikato team in wretched weather conditions. The very greasy ground upset the visitors’ game. Waikato were more vigorous and hitting was the deciding factor of the game. The visitors’ forwards kwerc unable to develop an attack [ smartly, while the Waikato halves were ■ strong. In the middle of the first spell Finch (Waikato) shot, Clark stopped and Farr followed in and netted. Waikato pressed consistently, the Australians conceding many corners. Waikato were playing splendidly and did not let up. From loose play near the circle Finch obtained and scored. The Australians attacked strongly. Fletcher (in goal) clearing brilliantly on two or three occasions. In the second spell the Australian combination was good, but the greasy ground upset several fine movements. In the middle of the spell Booth shot hard from the wing, putting Waikato three up. Australia was playing determinedly and a series of well-executed movements ended in Grey scoring. Two or three more strong movements were well cleared by Fletcher. The game ended with plav in midfield: Waikato X 3 Australia 1 The team left for the South to-night.
