JAPANESE PILOTS. With the retirement of Captain J. S. Stevenson. the last of the Japan foreign inland sea pilots has left. The foreign pilots were a necessity in the. early days of Japan’s intercourse with the WeM. but as Japanese became Qualified for pilotage work foreigners have dropped out. Many years ago new foreign entries were barred and now no foreigners are left. The voyage of the Empress of Asia from Moji to Kobe on March 12 was historic in ’hat it was the last occasion on which a foreign ship took a foreign pilot in Japanese Captain Stevenson was a Conway boy, born in 1865. After serving in sail and steam 16 years in the Glen Line, he took out, in 1904, the Glenartney to Kobe, where he delivered it to the purchasers, the Mitsui Bussan Kaisha. and decided to remain on as a pilot in the Inland Sea. and took out his certificate in August of that year. THE RUAPEHU. The Ruapehu sailed from Lyttelton yesterday for New Plymouth. Wanganui roadstead, and Wellington. The vessel is due at Wellington next Tuesday, and will sail two days later for Napier. Gisborne, and Auckland. She is now expected to sail finally from Auckland on August 8 for Boston. New York. Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Cardiff, and Avonmouth. MATATUA S PROGRAMME. To complete her discharging of Liverpool cargo, the Matatua arrived at Port Chalmers on Snuday from Lyttelton and leaves again to-morrow for Oamaru. thence Timaru, Port Chalmers. Lyttelton and Wellington, to load for London and Monte Video, and is due at Wellington on August 11. sailing finally from the latter port on August 20 for London, via Monte Video and Teneriffe. PERSONAL. Captain E. Jackson has t>een appointed master of the scow Echo, vice Captain F. Redford, who has been granted holiday leave. Mr. F. S. Hamlin, purser of the Kauri, left the vessel et Wellington on Monday. Captain Charles McArthur is leaving Wellington to-morrow for Helensville to undergo further medical treatment. R.M.M.S. I After the storm area was passed hne weatner ! prevailed for the remainder of the Atlantic crossing. Oil fuel tanks were replenished at Curacao on May 23 and Colon was reached on May ,30. Next day the Tekoa cleared Balboa. Moderate variable winds and seas prevailed until the vessel was south of Pitcairn Island, then westerly gales and rough seas were encountered until about four days I- 0 "* New Zealand when the wind changed to the south-east and blew hard from that direction until the Tekoa was nearing port. In spite of the boisterous conditions during the voyage the average speed was 13.6 knots. Captain S. W.
