SCHOOL GRAMOPHONES

(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 21. Claims for locally made gramophones for use in schools as against those of imported machines were pressed by a deputation representing the New Zealand Industrial Corporation and Manufacturers on Sir James Parr and the Hon G. J. Anderson to-day. The president of the corporation (Mr Watkins) urged the Government to carry out its policy of preference for New Zealand industry in regard to gramophones. He said that the manufacturers present were able to turn out a wholly New Zealand made article with the exception of the motors which wore imported from Britain. Mr Atkins said that some education boards had expressed the wish to give preference to New Zealand made goods and he hoped that Ministers would recognise the claims both from the practical and ethical point of view. They were prepared to satisfy Ministers that the tone and other features are equally as good as tho imported articles. Sir James Parr, in reply, said that the present contract was for one year. Local manufacturerers would have an opportunity of tendering next year. He had been advised that the British machine was the best for school purposes and cheaper than the instrument made in New Zealand. Air Anderson said that if they urge to manufacturcrc in New Zealand they must make an article equal to the very best.
