GOLD DEALING
ALLEGED BREACH OF LAW. I GREYMOUTH, July 20. { Illicit gold dealing was alleged in the . Warden’s Court in a charge by the ‘ Mines Department against Patrick J. [ O’Donnell, hotel manager, Waiuta. It j was alleged that O’Donnell had deal-, ings in gold with a mythical Chinese. He was charged with making a false [ statement in the gold dealers’ book at : the Bank of New South Wales, Grey ’ mouth, on December 16, that gold bought by the bank was sold on bo half of Hip Wan and Ah Gow, and was obtained at Waiuta. Defendant pleaded not guilty. The Crown Solicitor (Mr Hitching ham) said that evidence would be submitted that the Chinese names were assumed. The police discovered that an Ah Gow died in 1923. O’Donnell refused to answer the questions of the mining inspector, but later to Detective-Sergeant Young Im said that two Chinese asked him to se“ gold for them as he could get a better price. He could not say where the Chinese were to be found, and had no written record of the transactions. The case is proceeding.
