AMUSEMENTS, MEETINGS, ETC.

THE GRAND. “HUSBANDS AND LOVERS.” A COMEDY-DRAMA OF MARRIED LIFE. The comedy of domestic entangle--3 ments, a subject that has proved John 1 M. Stahl’s forte, furnishes the plot for 5 his latest picture, “Husbands and !; (Lovers,” which was screened to a largo , audience last evening at the Grand j j Theatre. ■ | “Husbands and Lovers” is not farce. l ilt is humorous, extremely so, but it will i |also be very true to life. The fun ’ I comes from being in the position of i the “outside looking in.” To the mari | ried couple on the screen, the quarrels land misunderstandings that mar their , | relations are not to be taken lightly. i Far be it —especially when hubby's! i friend makes love to his wife and she encourages him. There certainly is nothing frivolous about that, and yet the spectator, while appreciating the impending tragedy, will find much to amuse him in the way it happens. A splendid cast, is seen in the principal roles of “Husbands and Lovers.” Heading the list, are Lewis S. Stone, Florence A ider and Lew Cody, all in- . jdividually brilliant stars with the addled advantage of having parts exactly i suited to their type and personality. The picture is a First National release presented by Louis B. Mayer. The supports include “Scenes in San Frani cisco,” “The Punch of The Irish.” a ■ screaming farce comedy, and the Topical Budget. The plan for reserves is i open at the Grand Theatre office, s GARRISON BAND DANCE. A SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE. The Garrison Band carnival, which : was unavoidably postponed prior to the ' contests at Auckland at the beginning J of the year on account of the infantile .[paralysis epidemic and its consequent • restrictions, was successfully launched ' last evening when a most pleasurable ■ dance was conducted in Harman's Hall. The fixture attracted a particularly ‘ large attendance, and trippers of the Hight fantastic thoroughly enjoyed themselves until the “wet* sin a' hours ■ of the morn.” The hall was tastefully ' decorated with streamers for the occal sion, and the floor was in perfect con- ■ dition. Generally speaking, the assemblage was well catered for, and en- • ticing dance music was supplied by Stodart's Grand Orchestra. Mr G. Spriggens was M.C. During the course of the evening a dainty supper was dispensed by the energetic ladies’ com1 | mittce who organised the fixture. The initial efforts in regard to the carnival ; were certainly encouraging and gratifying to the assiduously working execu ! 1 five, and as a result of last night's! function the band funds were aug- : mented to an appreciable extent. Mi l G. Spriggens took the opportunity during the evening to thank those present for their support and assistance, am’, announced that a concert, in further aid of the band's funds would be held in St. Daul’s Hall on Thursday next, July 21.
