“BY FIVE MINUTES”
RACE TO WELLINGTON. CALM BEATS HOLMDALE. There was no little excitement among the crews of the Holmdalo and the Calm on Thursday morning at Lyttelton when it became known that both vessels wore to sail at about 3 p.m. for Wellington, . It meant that a race would ensue. . Some time ago a race took place between these two vessels between Wellington and Lyttelton when both entered the heads about the same time. The Holmdale displayed a greyI hound on her mainmast, signifying that, she was the, faster of the two vessels, but the crew of the Calm considered that the greyhound was put on the wrong ship. The winner of tho race proved to be the Calm, which arrived at Wellington at 5.45 a.m., the Holmdale at 8.50 a.m., a difference of five minutes. Tho Holmdale, according to her agents, was at a disadvantage, being more heavily I laden. On previous occasions she had | beaten the Calm. ! On the other hand, members of the ' staff of tho Canterbury Steamship Comipany were jubilant over the vessel’s I win, and stated that although the Calm might have been the more lightly i laden, the vessel’s hull was in a very I dirty condition; it was intended to (dock her, on her trip south, for cleaning. | The Calm was built in 1909, and is 892 gross tons register. She is 143 ; nominal horse-power, length 205 ft. ■breadth 33ft., depth lift. I The Holmdale was built in 1921.
