The Hon. Downie Stewart arrived in Dunedin on Saturday evening. Captain D. R. Paterson, late of the Cyrena, with his chief engineer (Mr A. Christie), leaves to-day for Wellington on route to Singapore. Constable F. Tindall, who has been [stationed at Dannevirke for the past |. years, is shortly being transferred on promotion to the charge of the station at Waitotara. The death occurred nt Palmerston North of Captain George Augustus Preece, N.Z.C., aged 80. He wfcs a well-known veteran of the Maori War, was resident magistrate at Wairoa and Opotiki for twelve years, magistrate at Napier and later at Christchurch. He had been a resident of Palmerston North since 1892. Mr Cuthbert East has been appointed editor of the 4 4 Wanganui ' hronicle” and will take up his duties in a few weeks. Mr East is fi New Zealander and was educated nt Christ’s College and Canterbury College, where he took his B.A. degree. He is now editor of the Northern Advocate, Whangarei. At the conclusion of the Old BoysRatana game on Saturday, the members of the former team presented their popular skipper, Mr H. Fryer, a well-known Christchurch soldier, died in Lewisham Hospital on Saturday, following upon a brief but severe attack of pneumonia, jtelegraphs our special correspondent. W. Brown, who leave to-day for Palmerston North, whither Mr Brown has been transferred. Mr F. Haywood, in a happy speech, paid i tribute to the services rendered to the club by the guests of the evening dur I ing the many years that they had been I connected with it. In making Mr I Brown the recipient of a handsome j leather suit-case, and Mrs Brown of a ' pair of silver vases, Mr Haywood ex-

pressed regret at their departure ami wished them every success and happi ncss in their new sphere. A happy gathering concluded with the singing of “For they are jolly good fellow.*."

Captain Paterson and the officers of the Cyrena were entertained at the Rutland Hotel on Saturday evening bv Messrs Hague Smith and T. Lovegiow. [During the evening, a letter received by Captain Paterson from the Harbour Botird was read. In it the board con gratulated the captain and his otiicers on their complete exoneration by the Nautical Court of inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the loss of the Cyrena. The board was extremely pleased that they should have connthrough such an exhaustive inquiry with flying colours. Captain Paterson, speaking for himself land his officers, expressed sincere appreciation of the kindness shown to them by the people of Wanganui during their unforced stay in the city. He made special inference to Mr T. Lovegrove, who had made a perilous trip in the Munn to the wrecked Cyrena in order to cheet up the officers and crew. He hoped they would be able to return to WanIganui and renew old acquaintanceships
