AMUSEMENTS, MEETINGS, ETC.

THE GRAND. LEW CODY IN "A DANGEROUS PASTIME.” MATINEE TO-DAY AT 1 p.m. AND 3 p.m. Lew Cody has appeared in comedy dramas but never in an emotional drama of the typo of “A Dangerous Pastime” and it was only after careful study and deliberate consideration that he felt himself equal to lhe tre, mendous role thtat he enacts in the story. Those who have seen the production do not hesitate to say that Lew Cody rises to histrionic, artistic effects which he has never attempted. Another reason.for the great interest aroused by this production is that it is Mr. Cody’s first appearance in an emotional drama following his announced policy of creating new paths in photoplay stories; not only for his own gratification but for the advancement of the entire motion picture industry. Hi' is to be congratulated for endeavouring to got away from the conventional hackneyed stories and attempt to present life as it really is. In spite of the fact that this production has been announced ins an emotional and powerful drama, it is said that this gripping story by Windham Martyn is interspersed with a number of excellent comedy situations of the spontaneous order. Another reason is that Mr. Cody is presenting an all star east in order that the picture might be produced in the proper manner and with the proper atmosphere and together with the excellent photography and direction has rendered la classic that is well worth emulating. The supports include Fox News, showing the very latest in fox-trots, which should be seen by all dancing enthusiasts, because the steps can be learnt by slow motion pictures. A rattling good comedy, “Lightning Brice,” and a clever Educational, complete a tip-top programme.

“HUSBANDS AND LOVERS.” A COMEDY-DRAMA OF MARRIED LIFE. MONDAY’S ATTRACTION. The comedy of domestic entanglements, a subject, that has proved John M. Stahl’s forte, furnishes the plot for his latest* picture, “Husbands and Lovers,” which is the coming attraction at the Grand Theatre. Supported by a programme of high standard and enhanced by a do luxe presentation, the picture will open on Monday for a three days’ run. “Husbands and Lovers” is not farce. It is humorous, extremely so, but it will also be very true to life. The fun comes from being in the position of the “outside looking in.’’ To the married couple on the screen, the quarrels and misunderstandings that mar their relations are not to be taken lightly. Far be it—especially when hubby’s friend makes love to his wife and she encourages him. There certainly is nothing frivolous about, that, and yet the spectator, while appreciating the impending tragedy, will find much to amuse him in the way it happens. A splendid cast is seen in the principal roles of “Husbands and Lovers.” Heading the list are Lewis S. Stone, Florence Vidor and Lew Cody, all individually brilliant stars with the added advantage of having parts exactly suited to their type and personality. The picture is a First National release presented by Louis B. Mayer. The supports include “Scenes in San Francisco,” “The Punch of The Irish.” a screaming farce comedy, and the Topical Budget. The plan for reserves is open at the Grand Theatre ofiicc. ORGAN RECITAL. Mr. T. C. Webb will give another of his popular organ recitals in Christ ! Church on Wednesday evening next, July .15, and will play sonic new organ 1 pieces. Vocal muiic will be rendered by Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Spurring, Messrs F. A. Campbell, G. P. Williamson and E. J. Thomas. BALL AT KAITOKE. All residents arc asked to meet in lhe hall on Monday evening next to make arrangements for the Garrison Bland Carnival ball to be held at Kaitoke on August 5. GARRISON BAND DANCE. HARMAN’S HALL, MONDAY NIGHT. Everything is in readiness for the Big popular Garrison Band dance to be held in Harman’s Hall on Monday evening next. The ladies’ committee, in conjunction with the ladies associated with the bkind, have been working zealously to make the function a most successful one. The Wanganui Grand J Orchestra will supply the music and an I excellent and dainty supper will be [provided by the ladies associated with the Garrison Band Carnival, which is being held early in August.

The fancy dress social held at Kai Iroi on Thursday evening was a huge success, and the organisers must have ’)iun gratified at the sight of such a large and enthusiastic, audience. The success of the evening was in no small met sure due to the efforts of Air Thomas W. Watson, of the Willard Battery Service Station, who kindly supplied the beautiful electrical effects. T w fancy costumes ■were both beautiful and grotesque, and the committee had a very hard task to find the winners. The prizes kindly donated by Mrs Hr.iidley were awarded to Miss Alice Joplin (old English lavender) and Mr Ili-oti (swagger), the announcement of the awards meeting with general approval. Items were rendered during the evening by Miss Joslin and Edmondson, and Messrs Melody, Watson, Doig, Haar. Renwick and Edmondson. With such an array of talent, it is not surprising that encores were the order of the evening. Dancing was indulged in until the early hours, the music being supplied by Miss Hilda Newrick’s orchestra. An enjoyable evening was concluded about 2 a.m., and a long line of cars containing tired but nappy fancy dress revellers could be seen win ling their way round the great valley between 2 and 3 a.m. on their way back to the city.
