DEATH OF OLD COLONIST

LIVED UNDER FIVE SOVEREIGNS (Bv Telegraph—Special to Chronicle). CHRISTCHURCH, June 29? The death is announced of Mr Alfred Bird at the advanced age of 95 years. He was a native of Essex. England, and was well known throughout the Otago district as a builder and contractor, principally of schools and other public buildings, forty years ago. He is survived by three sons—Mr W. W. Bird (chief inspector of schools, Wellington), Inspector A. S. Bird (of the Police Department, Invercargill), and Mr A. Bird, (of Christchurch) —and two daughters —Mrs W. D. Orchard (Dunedin) and Mrs D. McDavitt (Christchurch) also twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mr Bird was a week old when George IV. died in 1830. He had therefore lived during the reign of five sovereigns.
