MARTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

The council met on Alonday evening, there being present: The Alayor (Air F. Purnell) and Crs. A. H. Bill, R. J. Moore, W. Price, J. D. Gorrie, G. B. Gregory, J. A. Bush, and H. G. Cam cron. Leave of absence was granted to Cr. Alogridge. CORRESPONDENCE The Levin-Foxton Railway League wrote stating that a meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 1, at 2.30 p.m. The secretary of the Alarton Fire Brigade wrote stating that Captain J. McDonald had resigned, and that Air Robert Anderson had been appointed in his place.—Approved. It was decided to place on record the services rendered by Superintendent AlcDonald during his 36 years with the brigade. The secretary of Alarton Fire Brigade wrote asking for the year’s subsidy and that alterations be made to the station so that three single men can reside there.—£s was granted towards alterations, and the subsidy was passed for payment. New Zealand Railways asking to be supplied with gas until electricity arrives, and whether the council will sup- 1 ply gas for heating purposes after electric light is installed at 9s 2d per 1000 cubic feet. —Granted, provided there is no material increase in the cost of coal. New Zealand Railways asking that council agaip consider the matter of charging Is per 1000 gallons for water supplied to Alarton Junction Station.— “It was stated that Palmerston North charged Is 6d per 1000 gallons and Wanganui City Council Is per 1000 gallons.—To be informed that the council consider Is is a reasonable charge. Air A. O. Scott wrote asking for a load or two of gravel for his front entrance on Skerman Street..—To be supplied on the usual conditions; applicant to pay cost of metal. The gas manager was instructed to make recommendations re the re-con-struction of the gas works. Crs. Bill and Gregory were appointed to sign the rate book. BOROUGH OVERSEER’S REPORT Air Brant reported on general maintenance work and that the street name plates were being erected. The building of the new storage tank at Tutaenui filters is now completed. The fixing up of the inside wall will be done later, also the banking up of the clay around the tank. The two tanks are both eleven feet deep, the present water level being eight feet. By altering the ball cock these tanks will hold nine feet of water, making a total of 90,000 gallons storage. The reservoir is holding 24ft Sin of water and is overflowing. Embankments are in good order. Sewerage required in Bevan Street. This was referred to by Cr. Brice.— The council decided to undertake the work provided those interested provided the finance. No tenders were received for the septic tank paddock. Tenders for stripping the metal pit were considered too high. The foreman is to make a report to the finance committee on Friday. The gas manager is to report on the organisation of the staff. Attention was drawn by Cr. Gorrie to over-hanging trees obscuring electric lights.—This matter was referred to foreman. AlcDonald, A. Barrington, A. Wysocki, O. Naumann, Airs B. Parkes, and Aliss Sutcliff; hon. secretary and treasurer, Air Al. Gordon; assistant secretaries, Aliss Al. Wilkie and B. Barrington. Votes of thanks were accorded Afessrs Fagan and Croucher. The mooting adjourned until July 12, when rules will be submitted and other matters discussed.
