ACCIDENT ON PARITUTU
REPORTER BELIEVED TO HAVE FALLEN INTO SEA (Special to “Chronicle.”) NEW PLYMOUTH, June 28. What is feared will prove a fatal accident occurred on Paritutu this afternoon. James Scanlan, aged 19, a reporter on the Taranaki Herald, and a; son of the manager of the Melbourne i Clothing Company, set out to Paritutu. ;I He was accompanied by a friend. The ’ two got safely to the point where the • 1 track winds round the rock to the top. , I Scanlan said he would attempt to reach ■ the summit by a direct climb, which i is dangerous and difficult. His friend after seeing Scanlan negotiate the most ; dangerous part safely went along the I track. When he reached a point where I he should have again seen Scanlan the ■ ! latter had disappeared. This was only ■ a few minutes after the pair had been , together. An alarm was raised and i search parties have been out all night, but without result. It is feared the unfortunate young inau has fallen into the sea. : (Scanlan has a brother attending the I Wanganui Collegiate School.)
