TARANAKI v. WANGANUI. COMMENT ON TARANAKI PLAYERS. The following team has been chosen by the selectors (Messrs. Jas. McLeod, C. Brown and W. A. Guy) to represent Taranaki in the first representative match of the season, which takes place at Wanganui on Wednesdav: — Full-back—H. W. Brown ‘(Old Boys). Three-quarters. C. Paterson (Kaponga), H. Ennis (Tukapa), N. Ross (Inglewood). Five-eighths.—Earle (Old Boys), R. Oliver (Tukapa . Half —M. Lynskey (Kaponga). Rover—R. Fry day (Stratford). Forwards —Hookers, Johnson (Tukapa). Robinson (Hawera); lock, R. Paterson (Hawera); sides. Ward (Clifton). West (Hawera): back row, Kiveil (Stratford) and Baldwin (Patea). Emergencies—Back. Bruce (Star); forwards, Malone (Kaponga), Martin (Kaponga). The team will leave by the mail train on Wednesday morning. Commenting on the selection, the Taranaki Daily News says: No doubt the work of the selectors will be criticised, but the critics will be handicapped by the fact that it is so early in the season that the selectors have not had the opportunity of seeing every player in Taranaki in action. The team should prove a strong one, though in the backs there will probably be a lack of combination. Exception may be taken to the inclusion of Brown, who has been playing centre three-quarter, at full-back. This is perhaps unfair to men like Petty (Tukapa', Young (Clifton), and Tuki (Okaiawa), who have been playing in that position, but probably the selectors consider that Petty, who is the best of the trio, is too young and will be all the better for a little more experience. Brown has all the qualifications that make for a full-back, being a good tackler, a safe field and a good kirk whilst he is fast also. The three-quarter line should prove fast ami resourceful. Ennis is well known and experienced at centre, whilst the Ingiewod boy. N. Ross, is playing ri~Lt up to top form, showing great dash" C. Paterson is a new man to earn his representative cap. He is very speedy and a great kick, besides possessing weight. He should make good. Hart was not available. Earl, the Old Boys’ five-eighth, *s also a new man to earn his Taranaki cap, but he shows resourcefulness ami is fast and nippy. R- Oliver, the first five-eighth, is playing better football than ever.
Probably the half position will be most criticised. Many thought that Morey would be there. The selectors have, perhaps been actuated by a desire to put a solid defensive man behind the pack, and for this they have the right man. The forwards are a fast and weighty lot and should uphold the reputation of previous Taranaki packs.
