THE BRITISH LEGION
ENORMOUS POWER FOR GOOD. LONDON, May 31. In his presidential address at the opening of the conference of the British Legion, Earl Haig welcomed Lord Jellicoe as a valuable reinforcement to the legion. He regretted the resolution passed at the conference of “Fidac” in September last, urging collaboration of Allied Ex-servicemen’s Associations with ex-enemy organisations, which had not met with the whole-hearted support of the Allies. He emphasised the legion’s enormous power for doing good by working to secure the peace of the world by agreement, co-opera-tion, and mutual goodwill; also binding the Empire together by a chain of mutual goodwill and understanding. He mentioned that there had been an increase of 103 branches of the legion. It was now the largest non-party organisation in the country. Prince Arthur of Connaught presented Earl Haig with the legion’s royal charter. Lord Jellicoe said that he would devote himself to helping the class of emigrant who was willing to work on the land, the class for which there was every opportunity in Australia and NewZealand.
A SETTLEMENT SCHEME w Received Juno 1. 11.40 p.m. LONDON, May 31. Earl Haig announced that the Legion is working out a scheme for training ex-service men and families with the view to organising a Legion settlement in one of the dominions.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
