SUBSIDENCE CAUSES SENSATION HUGE HOLE ON HAKA GROUND (Per Press Association.) ROTORUA, June 1. At noon to-day, without warning, a big area of ground in front of the Maori meeting house at Whaka subsided, leaving a hole filled with boiling water. Yesterday a great crowd of visitors was on the spot, which has been the scene of numerous entertainments, including those for the British, Japanese and American fleets. Over it hakas were performed for generations. The hole measures on the surface twelve feet by ten, but the sides arc cavernous, and the heavy steam clouds issuing disguise its extent. The meeting house is not apparently endangered, though the structure adjacent is in process of undermining. The main road to the Spout Bath passes directly over the danger spot. The substance of the walls is friable, and the ultimate limit of the subsidence is hard to define.
Numbers of spectators were attracted by the news, and visited the spot during the afternoon, keeping at a discreet distance.
