N.S.W. ELECTIONS

VERY CLOSE CONTEST ISSUE IN DOUBT BOTH SIDES HOPEFUL By Telegraph—Per Press Assn.—Copyright. SYDNEY, June 1. Sir George Fuller is sanguine that fie will have a working majority when absentee and postal votes have been distributed. Ministers generally are hopeful that the Government’s position will improve as the count progresses. Mr Chaffey’s seat is safe. Mr Lang asserts that Labour will have forty-six seats in the new Parliament. It has a splendid chance of gaining two others. The party would therefore be in a position to form a Ministry independent of all other parties. The Herald forecasts that the final results will be: Labour, 46 scats; antiLabour 44. The Telegraph reverses the figures. The aggregate votes polled show 433,333 anti-Labour; 419,919 Labour. For the second time in Wagga’s history a flood occurred on polling day. The last instance was in 1891, on a Saturday, when the waters were within a few feet of the polling booth. The voting is stated to have been very light, amounting to only 25 per cent. At North Wagga the poll was postponed. Residents will be able to vote there as absentees.

WAITING FOR ABSENTEE VOTES Received June 1. 10.10 p.m. SYDNEY, June 1. The counting of absent and postal votes has commenced but until this is completed the distribution of preference votes will not be started. The latest figures do not alter the state of parties.
