NOTES AND COMMENTS (“By “Early Bird.”) Wanganui nominations close at 8 o l clock on Monday night. The South Canterbury and Marlborough meetings conclude to-day. Mr J. O’Neill has unfortunately lost the rising two-year-old colt by Arrowsmith from the brilliant mare Gladiolo, dam of the speedy Orchid. There was a change of this youngster going to a Riccarton stable, and the trainer concerned said that he was one of the finest yearlings he saw in a recent trip to the north.

Three yearlings by Sutala (ElysianLady Hester), have arrived at Riccarton from Mr G. D. Greenwood’s Teviotdalc Stud and R. J. Mason will shortly start to break them in. They are a colt from Greenstreet (dam of Corinthic), colt from the Demosthenes mare Egotism (her first foal) and a filly from the Danube mare Roden.

A Napier writer states: The Hawk arrived in Hastings on Wednesday evening from Australia, and his advent was greeted by an assemblage of interested followers of racing, who gathered at the railway station to greet him. He appeared to be in excellent condition and in a run on the Hastings course on Thursday, when R. Hunt was in the saddle, showed up splendidly in the gentle exercise he was given. It is now definitely settled that he will be a starter in the Ormond Memorial Cup.

Although there was a fair entry for the Flying Handicap at the Canowindra races last Wednesday week, only Little Stan and Cool Kit were saddled. When betting opened there was a rush to back Little Stan, and he quickly hardened to 5 to 4 on, with his opponent at even money. When the starter said “go,” Cool Kit was luff standing, and Little Stan, untroubled throughout the half-mile, won pulling up by 50 yards. The stewards, however, then took a hand in the matter, and shortly after the horses had re turned to weigh in they declared “no race.’’ Consequently, all bets were declared off. The “Chronicle’’ Christchurch correspondent wired last night as follows: —J. McCombc contemplated leaving for Sydney with his team aboul the middle of this month, but the trip has been abandoned for the present. Sunny Loch has failed to strike form, which accounts chiefly for the change of plans. If the horses go on all right McCombe may pay a visit to Australia in the spring. Newspaper reporters are often blamed when some horse or other that has been doing well in private is a strong tip for a race, but my experience is (says “Pilot”) that trainers have more to fear from members of their own calling than from anyone else. The possession of a trainer’s license does not enable the holder to live on air, and when you see men who do not, on an average, turn out more than a couple of winners a year wearing a prosperous appearance, the idea suggests itself that they are possibly getting more out of supplying information about other people’s horses than from training those in their own stable. Nor is it always financial consideration that causes information to be imparted. Friendship alone often causes a trainer to tell a bookmaker or pv ter something that may be useful to hi in. A.R.C. patrons are watching for the next appearance of the Solferino mare Ransack, who ran a close second to Wallace Peer at Victoria Park on Wednesday of last week. Her excellent effort has been accepted as an indication that she is not far from the form she displayed in New Zealand as a two-year-old. However, had it not been for her own stout heart and the services of a highly skilled “vet,” Ransack would have been forgotten months ago. A severe attack of strangles reduced her to such a condition that she could not stand, and food had to be given her by artificial methods. Her appearance now makes it difficult to believe that she passed through such an ordeal, and that between 50 and 60 incisions were made in her neck, throat, and jaws before the cure was effected.

Only a few days ago Air M. Robinson, of Bourke, gave 1300 guineas for a yearling Ally by Sarchedon-Reap. It dropped dead yesterday afternoon says a Sydney writer a week ago. The filly had been entrusted to the care of J.

Barden, and with a view to breaking it In he had put the tackle on her just to mouth her, and she had not been lt driven” at all. She was put in a small sand yard all to herself prior to being tackled to-day, and led with long reins. Barden had not left her half an hour when he returned to find the Ally dead. The filly was a half-sister to W. j Kelso’s fine galloper Bairn. It is believed that the fdly was uninsured. Thfl Randwick veterinary surgeon, W. J» Miller, make a post-mortem examination and found that the immediate cause of death was found to be b.ot flies. The post-mortem disclosed a diseased liver, and both lungs were spot ted. BRED IN THE PURPLE ABSURD LEADS THE WAY | YEARLING AVERAGER 1 Mho would have thought that thiw year only 13 yearlings would top the ' thousand guineas? queries the Sydney j writer “Poseidon”. There were 24 last I year. Everything looked bright for a ! record sale, but the total fob short by about 13,<Ml0gns. of the figures for 1921. With a few exceptions sportsmen shied at paying very high prices for yearlings, and not one realised 2000gns. One reason for the slump in prices for the topnotchers was the absence of some big buyers. Non-stop bidders like “E. Al. Melrose” and J. R. Cortcen wore among those not in the market, otherwise wc might have seen some tall figures. • Last year Valais and Comedy King both had four-figure averages, but this year not one sire performed the feat. Absurd got closest, and he was well ahead of Woorak. the next on the list. Really the most creditable average was Sarchedon *s. because he is an untried sire. He finished fifth, but those in front of him had few’ yearlings in the ring, whereas he had 29. and they averaged 598gns. Mr P. Miller also did well with Afagpic, who did next best of the sires with more than 10 yearlings. The demand for the Magpies demonstrates the effect the form of one horse can have on the sale of his sire’s stock. Last year Magpie averaged 2221-gns. but Windbag put him so much in the boom that on this occasion he averaged Many sires took big drops in the list, notably Rossendale and Chrysolaus. The former averaged 321.5. against 731 last year, and Chrysolaus fell from 574 to 239. The latter took a back seat to one of the same colour in Sarchedon. Quantock, Beragoon, Cetignc, and Eudorus all went back considerably.
