NOT WANTED

GERMAN EXHIBIT AT DUNEDIN EXHIBITION. (Per Press Association) DUNEDIN, Jan. 9. The Exhibition directors received at a meeting last night an application from Hamburg for space. The chairman moved that a reply be sent that all applications from foreign countries were being received through their consuls, and that as ther c was no German consul in New Zealand, the directors regretted they could not accept a private application. Mr Tapley (Mayor) expressed thc opinion that such a policy might lead to setting up a German consul in New Zealand, and the development of a huge business with Germany, whereas if they quietly accepted a few exhibits it would be nothing more. Mr Hainsworth, the imported manager of the Exhibition, said in other parts of the Empire the German exhibits would not bo encouraged, but would be accepted if they came along. During further discussion concerning the Government’s attitude, the chairman said he had informed the. Government of his view that Germany Was in the position of a fraudulent bankrupt, and ought not to be allowed to come into competition with those seeking to carry on business honestly.

The matter has not yet been definitely placed before the New Zealand Government

Consideration was ultimately deferred for a week.
