BURNSIDE STOCK SALE.

(Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Oct. J. The sale of sheep at Burnside to-day brought the highest prices offering for many days. Fat cattle had a capital sale, though values were somewhat cheaper than the high rates of last week. Pigs were slightly cheaper. Fat Cattle.—A yarding of 240 head of very fair to good quality, compared with last week’s entry of 164. The entry included a good number of extra prime heavy bullocks. Demand at the opening was easier, and did not reach the extreme rates of the previous week. The sale soon pulled up, however, owing to -outside butchers operating, and good clearances were effected at somewhat irregular values — some 10s below last week’s high rates. Generally, the sale was a capital one. Prime handy weight bullocks sold at from 45s to 48s per 1001 b.; prime heavyweight bullocks, from 42s fid to 44s 6d; prime heifers and medium quality bullocks, from 40s to 425; prime cows and light heifers, from 32s 6d to 35s 6d; light and aged cows, from 26s 6d to 28s 6d. Extra prime heavy bullocks sold at up to £24 ss; prime heavy, £lB to £2l 2s 6d; prime, £l4 to £l6 17s. Extra prime cows sold at up to £9 10s, and good sorts from £6 15s to £B. Extra prime heifers had clearance at up to £9 10s, and good heifers at from £7 to £8 10s.

Fat Sheep.—The entry totalled 1562 head, compared with 1740 last week. All were in wool except one truck lot. Demand at the opening was fairly good, and quickly improved, good values being secured right up to the finish. Prices were up from Is to 2s per head on last week’s rates, and it was probably the dearest sale for many months. Freezing operators stated that they were paying up to 9d per pound for wethers of restricted weights. In some cases they paid butchers’ prices. Prime handy weight butchers’ wethers sold at from 8d to B,}d; prime heavyweight wethers, 7-Ad to 7fd; handy weight wethers, 7jd to 7Ad; medium quality and lightweights, 6Ad to 7»d; extra prime ewes, 6Zd to 6|d; prime ewes, to 6d; light and aged ewes, 5d to 5Ad. Extra prime heavyweight wethers brought up to 66s 3d; prime heavy, 50s to 55s 6d; medium, 46s to 48s. Extra prime heavyweight ewes brought up to 46s 9d; prime heavy, 36s to 40s; light, from 345.

Spring Lambs.—Spring lambs of good quality were forward, and prices were easier. Prime heavy lambs sold at from 40s to 50s, and lighter animals at 35s to 39s (equal to Is 3d per pound). Store Cattle.—A yarding of 200 head, including a number of fair to medium steers, the balance Consisting of cows and young sorts. Demand for best grade steers was good, but the sale was slow, so far as indifferently bred animals w’ere concerned. A pen of good four to five-year-old bullocks brought £7 4s, and medium three-year-old bullocks brought £7 2s 6d. A pen of medium eighteen-months animals made £3 10s. A number of pens of indifferent quality -were passed in, and other values were unchanged. Pigs.—An entry of 140 fats and 160 stores. The offering was larger than that of last week, and prices fell about ss. Baconers made up to 9d per lb. and porkers up to Bd.
