MARTON JOCKEY CLUB. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A committee meeting of the above club was held on Wednesday evening, Mr. R. E. Beckett presiding. Mrs. A. Hay Campbell, hon. secretary of the council of the Victoria League, wrote thanking the club most gratefully for its generous donation of £lOO towards the Wanganui Cancer Fighting Fund. The following new members were elected:—Messrs Rex Marshall, Thos. Boddy, E. Hall and Keith Stevens. SUMMER MEETING, 1925. The programme committee submitted the following programme for the summer meeting, to be held on January 1 and 2„ 1925. The stakes total £4000: (First Day.) Trial Plate, of 150 sovs., six furlongs. Hack Hurdles, of 200 sovs., 1| miles. Juvenile Handicap (two-year-olds), of 200 sovs., five furlongs. Marton Cup (open), of 700 sovs. (including a silver cup, value 60 guineas), 1J miles. Dash Hack, of 175 sovs., six furlongs. Railway Handicap (open), of 300 sovs., six furlongs. New Year Hack, of 200 sovs., 8| furlongs. Stewards’ Welter (open) of 250 sovs., seven furldngs. (Second Day.) Junction Plate, of 150 sovs., five furlongs. Hack Hurdles, of 200 sovs., 1$ miles. Electric Hack, or 175 sovs., five furJongs. Aidworth Stakes (open) of 450 sovs., one mile and a distance. Ladies’ Bracelet, of 150 sovs. (including a gold bracelet watch, value 10 sovs.), 8| furlongs. Telegraph Handicap (open), of 275 sovs., six furlongs. Farewell Hack, of 175 sovs., six furlongs. Tutanenui Welter (open), of 250 sovs., seven furlongs. Mr. J. R. L. Stanford was appointed assistant handicapper for the summer meeting. MARTON BOROUGH COUNCIL. A special meeting cf the Council was held on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. F. Purnell) and Crs. Mogridge, Bush, Moore, Gorrie, Gregory, Price and Cameron. An apology was received from Cr. Bill. The meeting was held to consider the question of the erection of abattoirs for Marton. After discussion it was resolved (Crs. Moore —Bush) That the Council take the necessary steps to raise a loan of £6OOO for the purpose of acquiring land and establishing an abattoir on section 5, block 5, Crofton, provided such loan can be raised at not exceeding 5| per cent, interest, plus 1 per cent, sinking fund. It was further resolved (Crs. Gregory —Bush), That this Council is willing to purchase from the Public Trustee in the estate of the late E. H. Jones, deceased, the property containing 8 acres, 3 roods, being section 5 of block 5, Rangitikei S.D., situated in Crofton, at the price quoted, viz., £lO5O, provided the Council’s loan for abattoirs can be successfully raised. Correspondence was received from the town clerk (Hawera) and from chief inspector of buildings, New Plymouth Borough Council, relating to reinforced concrete buildings. The latter mentioned that curtain walls for reinforced concrete buildings are allowed up to 50 feet high, and that it is expressly stated that the piers and girders carry the whole weight. In ordinary construction, he stated, the Marton Hotel could be built with the piers 14 feet apart and the top floor could have 4J-inch walls and the ground floor 6-inch w. Ils, while with no piers at all they could build with 7-J-inch and 6-inch walls respectively. The building inspector (Mr. Knigge) stated he was perfectly satisfied with the thickness of the piers and walls in the Marton Hotel, and had no objection to granting a permit for the construction of the hotel as defined in the plans and specifications. It was resolved (Crs. Mogridge— Moore) That Mr. Brant be instructed to dispose of the overflow from the roof of the engine-shed at the rear of the Town Hall to the best advantage and connect same with Marton Bowling Club’s drainage.
