LIQUOR FOR KLONDYKE

A PLAN THAT FAILED. Received October 1, 10.10 p.m. OTTAWA, Sept. 30. When America went officially dry it became impossible for the people of the Klondyke to obtain supplies of liquor, even for medical purposes, American officials declining to allow liquor to cross the narrow strip of Alaskan territory which affords the only entrance to Dawson. This summer Canada and the United States reached an agreement under which it was arranged to allow liquor to be shipped into Yukon territory. A shipload was recently sent north, but when it reached Dawson it was discovered that sixty per cent, had been looted. Many bottles were refilled with water and others were empty. The supposition is that the cargo was tapped in Vancouver in the interests of the botlegging trade.
