After 34 years service under the flag of the Union Company, the steamer Taviuni, which has been lying idle in Sydney Harbour since December. 1922, has been sold to a Sydney ship-breaker. The Taviuni left the yards of Messrs W. Denny and Brothers, of Dumbax*ton, in 1890, only a few months after the A.U.S.N. Company steamers Aramac and Arawatta. In her palm days the Taviuni was a high-class passenger vessel, and ran for many years in the service from Auckland to Fiji and Samoa. She was specially adapted for the carriage of fruit. Prior to lying up in Sydney, the vessel was engaged as a cargocarrier in the Sydney-Tasmanian service.
