WELLINGTON R.C. WINTER MEETING

KEEN RACING AND SEVERAL SURPRISES. NUKUMAI WINS WINTER HURDLES. INCOME THE HANDICAP. (By Telegraph). (From O<r Special Reporter). WELLINGTON, July 9. The weather was fine and the track holding for the opening day of the Wellington Winter meeting. FIRST WIN OVER HURDLES Roval Star, Vindictive, Earthshine and Athens 11. were the scratchings for the opening event, and backers went for Admiral Codrington, Merry Singer, Royal Fame and Solfanello in that order. Merry Singer went to the front with Billy Gluten, with Royal Fame and Admiral Codrington handy. Billy Gluten tired round the back, where Merry Singer was joined by Royal Fame, Admiral Codrington and Demand next. Royal Fame lost his place as the result of a bad jump at the live furlong post, and from that stage to the finish nothing had a chance with Merry Singer, who came on to win very easily by five lengths from Demand, who, despite two bad jumps at the third and last fences, had more in him than Admiral Codrington and beat him by two lengths. Tentcrfield, who jumped badly in the early stages, was going well at the finish, and he was six lengths behind Admiral Codrington, who was followed by Radiac, Solfanello and Royal Fame. The winner was enabled to win comfortably on account of his good jumping. BIG OUTSIDER SCORES. Barleycorn and Counter Attack were the only withdrawals from the open sprint, leaving seventeen runners. Soliforni was a firm favourite, and of the others most money came for Alaric, Wassail, Dancing Days, Yoma and Rafa. There was a great surprise in store, the winner turning up in the little-fancied Rose of Athens, who, after being prominent all the way, got the. inside running from the false rail and beat Lady Fingers by half a length, the latter having been in the lead front the rise- of the barrier. Ecuador was also prominent as they hit the bend, with Soliform and Dancing Days noticeable. In the run home there was a great finish, but Rose of Athens finished well and Lady Fingers had to do her best to stall off Koodoo, who came on the outside and from a fair way back to run her to a neek. Another neck away was Avonlea, with Ecuador, Wassail, Lady Ridicule, Yoma and Alaric right up. Soliforpi faded right out in the run up the straight, and tihe well-fancied Dancing Days finished badly. Rafa was injured by running into a fence and took no part in the race. FIREBLIGHT SURPRISES The scratchings in the Hack Steeples were Carawock, Kohu, Ore Ore and Aehilleon. Bustler was the favourite, with plenty of support for Gaze. The backers of' the latter were soon out of suspense, as he fell at the first fence. Then Scintillation baulked at the second. Kovno tipped out, and the uext the logs, saw the end of Galway. Bust-

lor then led Rowan, Fireblight, Killard and Guanaco, and there was nothing in it till the last round, whore Bustler had if anything increased his lead, Fircblight, Rowan and Killard being within striking distance, while Guanaco was tiring. Fireblight set out after Bustler five furlongs from home, and they were soon the only two possibilities. Over the second last fence Bustler led by two or three lengths, but Fireblight got on terms at the last and making a better jump had matters all her own way in the run home, winning by four lengths. Rowan was third a hundred yards off, and fifteen lengths further away came Guanaco, in front of Killard, who knocked out a panel of the last fence. A SMART FILLY. Kuhio, Alpaca, Enthuse, Kilfaire, Huikai and Clarinda were the scratchings in the Trial Plate. Backers wanted nothing but Gardenia, and the Jorgensen bracket, Tanadees and Ma Boughal. From the inner Gardenia began best, with Sun Up and Slump the best of the others, and at the entrance to the straight Sun Up was leading the favourite, with the bracket next and Slump well up. Over the concluding stages Gardenia wore Sun Up down and won by a length, while Ma Boughal was a short neck off, followed by Tanadees, Slump, Dazzling Light, Papaponga and Lady Gay. The winner has now the record of three starts, three wins, and is evidently not finished yet. NUKUMAI’S SMART WIN. All nineteen acceptors went to the post for the big hurdles race. Boomerday was well in the lead in the betting pool, there being a big drop to Nukumai and Lochson, First Born, Alteration, Prince Rufus and Sir Rosebery being evenly fancied. When they were despatched Alteration, Maunga and Santiago were the last to leave the mark, Tinokaha taking the lead from En Route, with Boomerday, Omahu, Prince Rufus, Sir Rosebery and Penury Rose the most prominent of the others. At the first fence Omahu got into bother, and lost his place, and at the second a bad jump cost Boomerday a lot of ground, after which he never got going properly. Tinokaha, running right across the field at every jump, was still in charge as they came into the straight, Nukumai having headed En Route, with Captain Sarto, Prince Rufus and Sir Rosebery prominent. This -was the order through the straight, and running into the back stretch Nukumai went up to Tinokaha, followed by En Route, Maunga and Captain Sarto, Alteration, First Born, and Lochson beginning to improve their positions. Five furlongs from home Maunga outjumped Nukumai and took the lead, with Lochson and Alteration showing up amongst the others, who were beginning to feel the pinch, En Route and Captain Sarto being done with, while First Born was looking likely. Entering the straight Nukumai came up to Maunga and was over the last hurdle first, winning easily by three lengths. Lochson made strenuous efforts to overhaul Maunga, but failed by two lengths, and Alteration was next another two lengths off. Then at intervals came Omahu, Prince Rufus, Santiago, Vagabond, Penury Rose and Captain Sarto. EXIT FIRST BORN. Vagabond could have been fifth or sixth, but he was eased up on the post. Lochella was last. Le Forte ran off the course entering the straight the first time round, his bridle having broken. In making his run three furlongs from home First Born came to grief, and subsequently had to be destroyed. HANDICAP TO INCOME. Crucelle was the only scratching, leaving sixteen runners for the Parliamentary Handicap. Musketoon finished up favourite, about 100 tickets more than Income, with Comical and Arch Salute the best backed of the others. Printemps drew the rails and Income the extreme outside. Helen Rufus gave trouble at the post and after some delay they were despatched to an excellent start, from which Helen Rufus and Cold Steel soon tailed off. Printemps took up the running from Boadicea and Megan, and at the mile post Income had run up into fourth place, Comical being next. At the seven furlong post Megan had displaced Boadicea in behind Printemps, while Musketoon and Sunart had run up on the outer, alongside Boadicea and Income. A little farther on Arch Salute and Prince Fcrouz improved their positions, and by the time they reached the top turn Musketoon was with the leaders. About three furlongs from home Printemps still had charge from Musketoon, while Megan and Boadicea were dropping out, Arch Salute being prominent and Income still holding his place, Winning Hit being also noticeable. Printemps led into the straight. Here he was immediately tackled by Musketoon, with Income and Arch Salute, followed by Prince Ferouz, also throwing out challenges. Musketoon was the first beaten, and then Printemps, Income coming on the inside with a great finish to head the field a furlong and a half from home and winning from Arch Salute by a length, with Prince Ferouz another length off. Winning Hit was five lengths away in fourth place, and was followed by Comical, Boadicea, Cold Steel and Merry Day. It was a great performance on the part of the winner, as he had to be rushed in the early stages to get a position. Gray was seen at his best in the saddle. Arch Salute and Prince Ferouz both ran good races, and between the three of them they gave thj nan-stayers a rare showing up. Comical was badly placed in the middle stages, but both he and Boadicea, who ran well for a mile, were beaten by the distance. Musketoon looked a good thing at the top of the straight, but collapsed just as quickly as he hit the front. MISS MICKEY’S GOOD FINISH Tinokaha, First Born, Prince Rufus and Captain Sarto, who had contested the Winter Hurdles, were missing from the High Weight Handicap, in which Uralla was made a solid favourite. She ran well, but had no chance in the finish. Cartoon, Uralla, Te Maire and Goldpiece were prominent in the early stages, Proclaim getting left. Empyrean ran up to third down the back, where Cartoon stopped quickly and Uralla was left in the lead, others to show up at this stage being Militaire ajid Miss Mickey. Empyrean dropped back on the turn, where iafl run up from the rear, f { lets

with Miss Mickey was the first to reach Uralla, with Goldpiece handy. In the straight Proclaim had Uralla’s measure, but almost immediately succumbed to Miss Mickey, and then later to Goldpiece, Miss Mickey winning by two lengths, with Goldpiece a lengthy and a quarter ahead of Proclaim. Uralla was fourth another length off, and then came Birkenella, Dominant and Kyoto. A WIN FOR RANGITIKEI. Gardenia, Rafa anti Rene Mavis were taken out of the concluding event, leaving a field of twenty hacks. Barn Owl was a better favourite than Interest, good support being accorded Kilfaire, Te Kawa and Tussore. Otauru and Tussore began best, and led from Barn Owl, Treadwell and Kuhio, the field stringing out, Te Kawa being left and tailing the field. Tussore led into the straight, where he ran very wide, and carried out Barn Owl. The most prominent of the others were Kuhio, Interest, Te Kawa, and Brigadier Bill. Kuhio and Brigadier Bill came through the gap left by Tussore. The latter two joined issue over the last furlong, and, both staying on well, they provided the best finish of the day, Brigadier Bill gaining the verdict by half a head. Knighthood finished well into thir place two lengths off, and then came Kilfaire, Sir Moment and Puketoi. FULL DETAILS (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 9.
