Cambridge made 181 for 4 wickets' —Lowry (Cantabs skipper) 68, Austin (Australian) 42 not out. Sussex 180, Kent 308—G. Bryan 69, Woolley 117. Wensley took 6 for 96. Essex 288—O’Connor 62, Eastman 101; Surrey 69 for one wicket. Yorkshire, against Middlesex, made 334 for nine wicket’s—Holmes 61, Oldroyd 54, Leyland 51 not out. Lancashire hit up 267, Flint taking 5 for 55, against Notts, 290 —J. Gunn 55, Lilley 64. Parkin took 5 for 101. Playing for Gloucester against Derby, Smith made 97 and Salter 135. Owing to being struck by a ball in the Gentlemen-Players match, Gilligan, the English captain, is unlikely to play in Saturday’s Test match. The X-rays revealed severe bruising. AFRICANS v. NORTHANTS. LONDON, July 7. The Africans in the first innings against Northamptonshire made 380— Taylor 113, Nupen 57, Pegler (in) 50, Thomas took 8 for 96. Northants in their second innings scored 87. Blanckenberg took 3 for 17, and Pegler 6 for 27. The weather was fine but dull, and the wicket hard. Taylor displayed brilliant driving, and hit 16 fours. He batted for 175 minutes. Jupp’s absence, through a sprained tendon, severely handicapped Northants’ batting and bowling. Northants’ first wicket realised 55, and then the side collapsed.
