IMPERIAL EXHIBITION
PROPOSED ENTERTAINMENT TAX. LONDON, July 6. Strong protests have been aroused by the Taxation Department’s proposal to levy an entertainment tax on Wembley admittances. It is claimed that the Exhibition is exempt, firstly, because it is a display of industry and production; secondly, because it largely represents Dominion activities which are not taxable. The proposed tax is based on the grounds, amongst others, that. Australia’s and New Zealand’s cinemas are amusements. It is computed that the tax, if enforced, would amount to £260.000, payment of which will dissipate the remote possibility of the Exhibition yielding a surplus. The Dominions will be the chief losers through this cause, and the opponents. of the proposed tax urge the Dominions to take up the protest.
