MOTORISTS AND THE LAW
ENDORSEMENT AND SUSPENSION OF CERTIFICATES. FAVOURED BY LOCAL ASSOCIATION. At yesterday’s meeting of the Executive of the Wanganui Automobile Association, when an article, headed “Motorists and the Law,’’ clipped from the Wanganui “Chronicle,” was read a brief discussion arose as to the advisability of introducing legislation to deal with the endorsement, and ultimate cancellation or suspension of driving certificates. It was generally agreed that the time had arrived when the State should take upon itself the present responsibility of local bodies, in the matter of dealing with the issue, endorsement, suspeusion or cancellation of driving certificates. Dr. Porritt, chairman of the local association, said that the matter had already been discussed at the halfyearly general meeting rcently held m Wanganui. It had been agreed there that more strigent methods would have to be employed to deal with negligent drivers. A fine was in some cases too lenient,, and imprisonment too severe. The best method of punishing offenders was to endorse certificates, and even go so far as to prohibit them from driving a car. Mr. Jackson said that the matter should be referred to the New Zealand Automobile Union right away, so that it could be brought before the House during the present session. Mr. Bain stated that the matter would be in the Motor Vehicles Bill which was in course of preparation. If it was not it should be. It was resolved to write the New Zealand Union strongly urging that the matter be brought before the ressponsible Minister immediately.
