AMUSEMENTS, MEETINGS, ETC.

HIS MAJESTY’S “THE VIRGINIAN.” “The Virginian,” a Master picture, adapted from Owen Wister’s clasic novel of the West, commences at His Majesty’s Theatre to-night. This picture is hailed as a real screen classic, in which the east excel themselves in portraying the delightful characters of this well-read novel. Many amusing incidents occurred during the filming, one of which is well worth recounting. Harry Perry, cameraman for Tom Formap during the making of “The Virginia,.,” arrived at the Schulberg studios wearing the worried look that young men usually wear when they know that the stork is hovering about their home, An attentivq nurse had assured him that she would telephone the moment the Perry heir arrived. It was the day set for the filming of the whimsical scene in which the Virginian, in the person of Kenneth Harlan, mixes the infants at a neighbourhood dance.' Sam Nelson, assistant to Forman, had industriously telephoned every likely youngster in Los Angeles. They were beginning to pour into the studio gates when Porry, setting up his camera, was interrupted by a girl employee of the studios. “They’ve arrived!” exclaimed the girl. “The babies are wonderful!” “They! Is there more than one?” stammered Perry, his mind only on his own domestic problem. “More than one? Why, there arc thirty-one of them—” The expectant father staggered against a timber. “ —and there is one of the shiniest little piccaninnies among them!” The 1924 Grand National will also be shown on this programme. The race is recognised as the hardest in the world, and every year supplies thrills 'galore for those lucky enough to see it. “Babies Welcome,” a Christie comedy is also on this programme, and the latest Pathe Gazette and Topical Budget. The box plan is open till 5 p.m. at Upton’s and then seats can be booked at the Rialto or theatre.
