THE QUOTAS FIXED. Reeivcd July 1, 9.55 p.m. WASHINGTON, June 30. President Coolidge has issued a proclamation defining the quotas fixed by the new immigration law (which excludes Japanese), making Australia’s quota 121 and New Zealand’s 100. The largest quota is Germany’s (51,227). Next comes Britain and Northern Ireland, with a combined quota of 34,007. The_ Irish Free State has 28,567, Italy 3845, Russia 2248. Each figure represents two per cent, of the respective nationals resident in the United States as recorded in the census of 1890. The law extends admissibility only to aliens who are eligible for citizenship, the United States setting the nominal minimum quota of 100 for all nationalities, even if hitherto unrepresented. The measure recognises no quota restrictions against Canada and Newfoundland.
