BAND CONTEST
AUSTRALIAN BAND SUCCESSFUL IN ENGLAND. LONDON. June 29. The Newcastle Steel Works Band, playing the Ninety-fourth Psalm, arranged by Westonlithol, won the first prize of £l5O and a cup in a contest against the most famous bands except the Besses o’ the Barn, which was unable to compete owing to numerous engagements. The Steel Works Band were entertained on Friday night by the Besses o’ the Barn, when they played the piece named. The leader of the Besses o’ the Barn said it would require the very best band to beat them. The Newcastle Steel Works Band is composed of workingmen employed at the Steel Works. This band has been recognised for some years as one of Australia’s very best bands, and on one occasion won the Ipswich contest. It is generally regarded as the next best combination to Shugg’s Malvern Tramway Band. It is understood the Newcastle Band intend competing at the Crystal Palace contest before returning home, and there is every probability that the Band will compete, at the Auckland contest next February.
