DAIRY FARMERS’ UNION
BRANCH FORMED AT RATA. At a well-attended, meeting at Rata lon Friday evening it was unanimously decided to form a branch of the Dairy Farmers’ Union. The decision followed on representations by the Putorino branch. Mr. I. Gibbs presided and and addresses were given by representatives of the executive. It was pointed out that the Dairy Farmers’ Union in conjunction with the Farmers’ Union could have a decided influence in the government of the country and at the same time maintain a non-political attitude. A strong plea was made for herd-testing, instances being given as to the productivity of eows in San Francisco, where herd-testing was compulsory. One speaker said that, generally! speaking cows in New Zealand were a mongrel lot and the Dominion producer has to compete with producers in other countries whose cows yielded as much as 60 per cent, more than the average in New Zealand, which was 1801bs of butter-fat per cow, as compared with 3641bs in the districts referred to where herd-testing was compulsory. i
Mr. Williams, treasurer of the Wellington executive, pointed out that it was not so much increased prduction that was required as a decrease in the cost of production.
