Mr. G. J. Harford, of Auckland, h at present in Wanganui. From 65 applicants Mr. E. R. H Magnusson, of Hawera, has been ap pointed accountant to the Wairarapa Electric Power Board. Mr. W. J. Jordan, Labour M.P. for Manukau, accompanied by Mrs. Jordan, is visiting Wanganui, and is the guest, of Mr. and Mrs. F. Clark, of Wanganui East. A Sydney message reports that Mr R. W. Dalton, formerly senior British Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, •arrived by the Niagara to take up hi? duties as senior British Trade Commissioner to Australia. At Friday night’s meeting of the Wanganui Boxing Association feeling reference was made by the chairman, (Mr. J. Coull.) 10 the tragic death of Mr. H. V. Duigan. He said that the deceased gentleman was a true sport, and an amateur and if sport wanted anything to-daj it was amateurism. The news of the death of Mrs, Selina Newsome, which occurred at her residence, 88 Bell Street yesterday, after a lengthy illness, will beroceived with deep regret by a wide circle of friends. The deceased, who was born at Bolton, Lan cashire. 56 years ago, was of a kindly disposition and was loved ami highly respected by all who had the pleasure of coming in contact with her. She is survived by her husband, Mr. George Newsome, and a family of seven—two sons. Messrs. Stanley and Joseph of Wanganui, and five daughters, Mrs. G. Love, of Palmerston North, and Misses Edith. Vida. Gertrude, and Dulcie, of Wanganui The sympathy of their many friend; will be extended to them in theil bereavement. In speaking to Ihe motion moved in the Legislative Council ou Friday expressing the Council’s sense of th< services rendered to New Zealand by the late Hon. Gilbert Carson, of Wanganui, Sir Francis Bell ssid members of the Council would remember Mr. Carson well for the part he played durng the dreary days of the war. He had been full of hope and of confidence in the British Empire and this was reflected in hi» speeches. He said he had known the late Mr. Carson for many years, and had found him to be a man of strict integrity, exceedingly conscientious, and one who had the courage of his convictions.
