TRUST ATTACKED
U.S. GOVERNMENT TAKES ACTION CHARGES AGAU'.’ST OIL -COMPANIES. WASHINGTON, June 25. Heralded as the Government’s greatest attack upon trusts and monopolies, the Department of Justice brought a suit against fifty of the greatest oil refining companies, all affiliated with the original Standard Oil Company, charging conspiracy to violate the Sherman Act by combining to control the production of petrol through the utilisation of patent processes. The Government alleges that the effect of this has been to burden domestic and foreign trade in petrol, kerosene and kindred products, by levying thereon heavy charges in the guise of royalties. The companies mentioned have, since the original dissolution of the Standard Oil Company, also, upon t ie ground of violation of the Sherman law, made profits totalling in excess of two thousand million dollars.
