BOWLING
ST. JOHN’S CLUB The annual meeting of the St. John’s Bowling Club was held in the Central Hall last evening. The president (Mr. R. W. Green) occupied the chair, and there was an attendance of forty-two members. Several apologies for absence were received. Report.—ln moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, the president said that, with reference to membership, the active members’ list was a little lower than on the previous year, but he understood that there were several nominations pending. He congratulated the dub upon its measure of success in the centre competitions. They had won the Nixon Cup, a coveted senior trophy; but he thought it was more pleasing to know that the Club had been even more successful in the junior competitions, winning both the junior bannerette and the Willis Shield.
Also pleasing was the success of the Club’s rinks in the local tourneys, and in this connection he specially complimented Mr. Benefield and his rink upon their victory at their Easter Tourney. Mr. (Herd, too, one of the Club’s best players, was also entitled to hearty congratulations upon having annexed the most coveted of all trophies, the champion of champions for the second year in succession. He also congratulated Mr. F. Moffatt on his victory in the Club’s singles, and the skips and members who had been successful in the other competitions. Dealing with the financial position of the Club, Mr. Green briefly reviewed the balancesheet. and expressed his opinion that the position revealed was highly satisfactory. Mr. Green paid a special tribute to the Club’s caretaker, Mr. Loveridge; expressed regret at the loss the Club had sustained by the transfer from Wanganui of Mr. Levestam, their popular secretary; voiced the thanks of the Club to the ladies, and warmly eulogised the valued work of Mr. J. B. Jack, the Club’s esteemed hon. green superintendent. Mr. Green concluded by urging the members to study to the utmost the best interests of the Club, and eloquently indicating the qualifications essential to- that end.— The report and balance-sheet were unanimously endorsed without discussion.
Centre.—The report and balancesheet of the Wanganui Centre was read and received. Officers. —The election of officers resulted as under: —President, Mr. W. Glasgow; -vice-president, Mr. J. B. Jack; Hon. Sec., Mr. R. Greenwood; Committee: Messrs. Simpson, Moffatt, Falconer, Benefield, Michie, Green, Murch, Rowling and Sewell; Match Committee; Messrs. Moffatt, Benefield and Sewell; delegates to Bowling Centre, Messrs. Benefield, Jack and Green; Hon. auditors, Messrs. T. Ballingall and J. B. Smith; green snperintendeit, Mr. J. B. Jaek. Lata Members. —It was resolved after discussion that a minimum entrance fee of £1 Is be charged any member joining after the last day of February for remainder- of the season, the fee for balance of season as after December 31 to be half the regular season. B. Singles.—Mr. Handly presented a silver star for the B. Singles competitions, the gift being received with warm appreciation. Photo—On the motion of Mr. Harkness, it was unanimously resolved to obtain an enlarged photograph of Mr. G. R. Simpson, ex-president and secretary, to be hung in the pavilion. Subscription.—lt was resolved that the annual subscription be the same as last year. New Members. —The following new members were elected: —Messrs. Lewis Bassett, C. A. Gaze, F. Whitlock, J. R. Rowley, K. Edwards, Jas. Hill, Jas. Colville, Frank Wood. G. S. Vance. President. —In handling over the office to Mr. Glasgow the retiring president warmly eulogised that gentleman’s high qualities as a bowler, and expressed his appreciation of the honour the Club had conferred upon him in electing him to the presidency for two years in succession. On the motion of Mr. Glasgow a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the outgoing president.
Presentation of Prizes. —The prizes won in last year’s Club Competition were then presented by the president. Club Fours.—lt was resolved that the same system of selection as adopted last year be adhered to with the addition that at the end of the season the four leading rinks bo drawn to play off as a section, a motion to revert to the old system of fixed rinks being defeated.
Thanks.—Votes of thanks were ac corded to the ladies, the outgoing com mittee, and the Press.
