BURNSIDE MARKETS
(Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, June 25,
There were good sales of sheep and iambs at Burnside to-day, it being the last sale at which export buyers would operate. The fat cattle sale was decidedly easier, prices declining from 20s to 25s per head, and store cattle were also a trifle easier.
Fat Cattle.—342 head were yarded, compared with 282 last week. The quality was from fair to good. The sale opened quietly at lowered rates, but plain sorts and cows slumped badly. The keenest demand was for prime bullocks, but cattle, taken all round, declined in value from 20s to 25s per head. Choice handy weight bullocks sold at up to 29s per 100 lbs.; medium quality and heavy bullocks to 265; prime heifers 18s to 21s; cows and light heifers 15s to 17s 6d; prime bullocks to £l7; prime £l3 to £15"; medium, £lO to £ll 10 s; lighter sorts, £8 10s to £9 10s; extra prime heifers to £lO 10s; medium heifers, £6 10s to £8; lighter sorts from £5.
Sheep.—26oo head were penned, compared with 3044 last week . The sheep were of only fair quality,, the bulk made up of medium wethers and ewes, with very few pens of really fine quality animals. Prime ewes sold at a slight advance on last week’s rates, and the same remark would apply to extra prime wethers, the increase per head being from 6d to Is. Prime handy weight wethers sold at up to 7Jd per lb; prime heavy wethers, 7d; unfinished and plain wethers, 6d to 6|d; prime ewes, sd; aged and light ewes, 4d to 4Jd; extra prime heavy-weight wethers brought from 52s 3d to 55s 9d; prime, *4ss 9d to 46s 3d; medium, 34s to 38s; extra prime heavy-weight ewes, 355; prime, 25s to 32s 6d; light, 17s 6d to 225. Fat lambs.—A yarding of about 2900 head, compared with 909 last week. This was the last sale of the season at which exporters would be operating. There was a full yarding of mixed quality. Export buyers competed keenly for well-finished lambs, and prices realised were fully up to late rates. Extra prime lamb was worth from to.lid; second quality, 9d to 9id; extra prime lambs brought up to 43s 3d; prime, 33s to 355; medium, 2«5s 6d to 30s; ‘ unfinished, 20s tq 245.
Store Cattle. —There was a big entry, 320 animals being yarded, compared with 250 last sale. With the exception of some thirty head of fairly good quality three and four-year-old steers, the entry was comprised of old and young cows, a few young sorts being yarded. Steers sold rather more cheaply than of late. Good three-year-olds in fair condition made £5 10s. Fair sorts brought £5, and other classes sold at about last week’s rates.
Pigs.—There was a small yarding of pigs. These sold fairly well at late rates. £5 6s was realised for extra prime fats. Prime baccners sold at equivalent to 7Jd per lb. and prime porkers about 8 id.
