WINTER WEATHER

GENERAL OVER WIDE AREA. REMARKABLE VARIATIONS OF BAROMETER. (Per Prcsg Assrciation.) WELLINGTON, June 2. Hail and rain squalls, with a keen southerly, have been the unpleasant order in the matter of weather since more favourable conditions were suddenly disturbed on Saturday afternoon. Shipping is delayed. Week-end conditions, and those prevailing to-day, are midwintry in character. Reports from various places show that Wellington is not alone in its experience of most unpleasant weather. From inquiries made of the director of the Meteorological Office (Mr D. C. Bates), it appears that there has been a remarkable occurrence in connection with reports from the Chatham Islands. A week ago the barometric reading was 30.69 degrees, while the reading reported last night was 28.95 degrees, a difference of 1.74 inches. This is described as nearly the limit, and it serves to show how severe the oscillations of the barometer have been. It is curious that both instances have accounted for stormy weather on the East Coasteasterly winds in the former and southerly winds in the latter. The cause of these disturbances has to be looked for further afield, and for that reason the value and necessity of extended observations, as might be furnished from ships, etc., are made more apparent.
