THE BUCHAREST DISASTER
10,000 KILLED AND WOUNDED. LONDON, June 1. The Sunday Express, traversing the official report from Bucharest, affirms that Rumania has suffered a staggering blow to her military power. The Russians have recently been concentrating on the frontier of Bessarabia. Rumania therefore has been increasing her stores and munitions and her factories are working at full pres--1 sure. A delayed cable to the Express states that 10,020 were killed and wounded in an area of half a square mile, which was littered with live shells. The losses amount to £1,000,000. A small village near Newit was wiped out and seventy-five houses collapsed in Bucharest itself. ESTIMATE OF DAMAGE. BUCHAREST, May 31. It is estimated that two billion leis’ worth of damage was caused by the explosions, which continue. King Ferdinand narrowly escaped, as a live shell exploded on the spot which he had just vacated. The lei is, according to the exchange rate, worth 787.5 to the pound.
