PLUMBERS AND GASFITTERS

APPLICATION FOR DOMINION AWARD. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 7. An application by the New Zealand Federated Plumbers and Gasfitters’ Industrial Association of Workers for a Dominion award came before the Conciliation Council to-day. Applications for exemption were made on behalf of the Christchurch and Wellington Gas Companies and the Wellington Harbour Board, and after argument these were referred to the Arbitration Court. It was urged by the union that gas companies were in competition with the employers, and what was wanted was to be able to call the men out after hours and pay them, ordinary rates, while in such circumstances the ordinary employer would be required to pay overtime. Freezing companies were also at times in competition with other employers.
