FUTURE OF EMPIRE
LABOUR’S VIEW. LONDON, May 4. The Daily Herald, in an editorial On Labour and the future of the Empire, says that none of the Imperialists really understand the British Commonwealth of Nations. They are living in the past, Labour looks to the future and sees that common aims and ideals will be a far stronger bond between Britain, the Dominions arid India than artificial trade arrangements or naval and military fetters. Labour recognises the fact that the days of the old exchange of manufactures for the colonies’ raw material are passing, that the Dominions are seeking to manufacture their own raw material. Free Trade within the Empire would be worth something, and might lead to world free trade, but preferences are merely a politician’s playthings, devised chiefly with the object of keeping the Empire together as a war
